Description from the seller
An interesting work attributed to painter Andrée SIMON (1896–1981), painted in mixed media on canvas, in good condition.
Andrée SIMON, a painter born in 1896 and who died in 1981. Native of Normandy, she taught drawing for several years before dedicating herself completely to painting, opening her first studio in Rennes in 1928.
Her style is figurative and very close to Cézanne's.
She becomes friends with André Lhote, who teaches her to paint in Mirmande, Drôme, and with whom she discovers the village of Gordes, a true crush. With her husband, she bought a house there and lived there for forty years.
Many artists later joined Andrée Simon and André Lhote, including internationally renowned figures such as Victor Vasarely, Serge Poliakoff, Marc Chagall and Jean Degottex.
Andrée Simon then devoted herself to abstraction. For her it was a natural and obvious step. She drew inspiration from observing trees, clouds and all the effects of light. This abstract art, initially geometric, later becomes lyrical. But nothing is left to chance. Andrée Simon "builds" her works according to a very personal artistic approach. She gives free rein to her emotions and masters them through a process derived from her work and a self-imposed method. In this way, she attracted the attention of devoted art enthusiasts and enlightened critics with whom she maintained close relationships, such as Belon, Degand and Estienne.
Let us not forget that she was a woman in a misogynistic environment. The art world was mostly a man's world. Yet, thanks to her talent and work, she established herself as an artist who could not be ignored, with her distinctive talent.
