AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

An oil painting still life of sunflowers in a vase, by painter Tilly Moes.

Circa 1930.
Oil on canvas.
Signed lower right: Tilly Moes.
Dimensions excluding frame: 50 x 40 cm.

Sofia Theodora van Driel was born in Düsseldorf on 25-9-1899, as the daughter of Johannes Gerardus van Driel and Sophia Adriana van Lammeren. She lived with her parents in The Hague until her marriage (1927), where she attended the Academy of Drawing. In her pre-marital period (until 1927) she painted “antique” still lifes: intricate dark-looking pieces with much fruit and flowers, under the pseudonym Tilly Moes. She also held an office job to support herself.

She married in The Hague on 1 September 1927 to the painter Nico Bruijnenstein, whom she had met at the Academy, and soon moved with him to Gooi. In the period up to 1939 they moved frequently. They mainly lived in Gooi and the surrounding area (Blaricum, Laren, Eemnes, Vreeland, Kortenhoef), but they also stayed in Driebergen, Overveen, Oisterwijk, Antwerp and Ploesti (Romania).

After their marriage there of course had to be bread on the table, especially when in December 1931 their (only) son was born. They were proud that this was achieved solely through painting and that they also weathered the entire crisis period in the 1930s without having to beg for government aid.

Condition: the work is in good condition and is provided with the original frame, which has some damage, but you will receive it for free.

This artwork will be shipped carefully packed.
