Original drawing in ink and graphite on paper by Juan Barjola, titled Untitled, hand-signed at the bottom right, in good condition, mounted on a white mat measuring about 31 × 29.5 cm; sheet size 20.3 × 12.4 cm, Spain.
Description from the seller
Juan Barjola (Torre de Miguel Sesmero, Badajoz, 1919 - Madrid, 2004). Original ink and graphite pencil drawing on paper, hand-signed “Barjola” at the lower right.
Barjola won the Drawing Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1950. The drawing was the daily medium for his work for more than five decades. Present in all major collections in Spain, MNCARS, IVAM, Centre Pompidou, MoMA, etc.
Sheet 20.3 x 12.4 cm. It is mounted on a white mat of about 31 x 29.5 cm.
Four standing figures, crowded in the vertical format, with a fifth crouched in the foreground. The heads are drawn with quick, tangled strokes; the bodies, with large flat areas of black. Graphite fills the background with a loose diagonal hatch. It is the expressionist repertoire that Barjola fixed from the seventies onward: piled, deformed figures, with no air around them.
Condition: good, typical of paper with age. Slight overall yellowing. Some pinpoint rust stains, visible on the left edge and near the signature. Small spots in the upper corners, probably from previous mounting. No tears or creases.
Provenance: private collection, Madrid
