Description from the seller
Midi, on a stone ochre ledge. A naked man, in profile, sits at the edge of a pool whose turquoise water reflects gold onto the wall. The cypresses rise behind him, and the shadows cut neat bands across the warm tiles. He dips a leg and hesitates to enter.
We think of David Hockney’s grand swimming pools and the Mediterranean light that Bonnard painted with so much tenderness. Here, the scene doesn’t move: it’s the moment before the dive, when the water seems to be waiting as well.
A solar and sensuous painting, smelling of chlorine, salt, and the heat of the tiles.
