AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

An impressive and atmospheric Baroque oil painting on canvas, dating from the late 17th century. Flemish School (Around / follower of Peter Paul Rubens) The work is convincingly attributed to the Flemish School and shows the biblical scene of the Crucifixion of Christ on Mount Calvary (Golgotha).
Composition and details:
Center stage in the painting is the cross with the illuminated body of Christ, crowned with the crown of thorns and the INRI inscription. At the foot of the cross kneels Mary Magdalene in deep mourning. On the left stand the Virgin Mary in a traditional blue robe and the young apostle John draped in red, both with tearful faces and expressive emotion. To the right and in the background is depicted a dynamic, multi-figured composition with Roman soldiers on horseback and onlookers beneath a dramatic, stormy Baroque sky. At the base of the cross lies the symbolic skull (Adam’s skull).
Condition and authenticity:
In reasonably good antique condition (with signs of aging, fine craquelé, and a yellowed varnish layer consistent with the age), possibly restored. The painting remains in an authentic antique state. The canvas shows a fine and even texture of age craquelé across the entire surface. The varnish layer has yellowed over the centuries, giving the colors a warm, subdued tone.
Canvas dimensions (Height x Width): 50 x 60 cm
Dimensions including frame (Height x Width): 61 x 72 cm
