Description from the seller
A decorative round wall mosaic depicting a young woman in a headscarf, gazing upwards, set against a radiant gold halo.
The face, headscarf and striped garment are built from white ceramic tesserae, hand-painted with fine black and grey line work: long lashes, blue eyes, softly shaded features and a pageboy fringe. The painted lines run continuously across the tesserae. The halo is laid in concentric rings of gold-leaf glass smalti that catch the light beautifully. It is surrounded by a cobalt-blue band with painted white blossoms and an outer ring of red tesserae with gold dots, including several iridescent lustre tiles.
The mosaic is set in a round, shallow metal tray with a raised rim. The back is painted gold and fitted with two fixing points for wall hanging.
No signature found; maker and date unknown. A striking combination of Byzantine icon imagery and a stylised, glamorous portrait.
Condition: good, with signs of age. Some tesserae have small chips and cracks, notably in the headscarf and lower left. There is light staining and grout residue on the white face tiles, and wear to the outer ring and to some gold smalti. The back shows brush-stroke paint wear and tape residue. No missing sections. Please study all photos, as they form part of the description.
Carefully packed in a sturdy box with corner and surface protection.
