Josef Michael Mayburger (often also written Joseph, 1814 – 1908) was a significant Austrian Romantic landscape painter, teacher and active local politician who decisively shaped the cityscape and cultural heritage of Salzburg. Contrary to older sources that occasionally cite 1813, he was born on March 30, 1814 in Straßwalchen.
-----
Mayburger is regarded as the first native of Salzburg to establish himself in the 19th century as a recognized landscape painter. Until then, the region had mainly been a destination for traveling artists.
His artistic education included study under Georg Pezolt and Johann Fischbach. He was also a member of the “Little Academy” founded by Fischbach.
-----
Prices for smaller oil paintings by Josef Mayburger at auctions in major Austrian art houses typically range between €1,000 and €4,000.
