AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Hippolyte Boulenger (1837–1874) was a major Belgian realist landscape painter and the leading master of the École de Tervueren, often called the Belgian equivalent of the French Barbizon school.

Born in Tournai on October 8, 1837, to French parents. Orphaned and impoverished at a young age, he worked in a decoration atelier in Brussels while taking evening classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts under Joseph Quinaux.

In 1864, supported by patron Camille Van Camp, Boulenger moved to an inn in Tervuren. He gathered a circle of like-minded landscape artists around him, breaking away from rigid academic painting to paint en plein air.

His work features thick impasto (raised paint texture), emotional realism, and an atmospheric treatment of light, earning him a gold medal at the Brussels Salon in 1872 for Allée des Charmes (L'allée des vieux charmes).
