Description from the seller
SALVATORE MARESCA SERRA (Naples, 1956) – Profile portrait of a woman – Oil on canvas, 35 × 25 cm
Interesting and refined profile portrait of a woman by Salvatore Maresca Serra, Neapolitan painter born in 1956, executed in oil on canvas and signed “S. Maresca Serra” at the bottom right.
The work presents a subject particularly interesting within the artist’s production: compared to seascapes and landscapes that appear more frequently on the market, the painting concentrates entirely on the human figure and the expressive rendering of the face.
The young woman is depicted in profile, with her gaze lowered and a gathered and silent expression. The face, built through a delicate palette of pinkish flesh tones, ochre and browns, emerges from a deliberately undefined background. The hair, gathered at the nape, is treated with broad, textured brushstrokes, while the small red accent of the lips constitutes the most intense color point in the composition.
A particularly happy contrast is that between the greater definition reserved for the facial features and the freedom of the brushwork in the surrounding areas: an immediate and concise painting that preserves the freshness of the gesture without renouncing the construction of the facial features and the overall elegance of the figure.
On the back is present the artist’s stamp with the wording:
“OPERA ORIGINALE DI SALVATORE MARESCA SERRA – CATALOGATA A CURA DELL’AUTORE”
an element of particular documentary and attributive interest.
Technique: oil on canvas
Dimensions: 35 × 25 cm
Signature: bottom right, “S. Maresca Serra”
Back: stamp “Original work by Salvatore Maresca Serra – Catalogued under the author’s care”
Subject: profile portrait of a woman
Period: 20th century
Conditions: generally good, with normal signs of time visible in photographs.
