AI-assisted summary
Description from the seller
An elegant antique Japanese hand-painted hanging scroll (Kakejiku) titled “Kan'o” (観桜), meaning “Cherry Blossom Viewing,” depicting a beautiful spring scene with figures enjoying the seasonal cherry blossoms.
Executed by hand in color on silk (Kenpon Chakushoku), the painting combines cherry blossoms, elegant female figures, and traditional landscape elements, creating a graceful composition that captures the atmosphere of springtime in Japan.
The subject represents Hanami, the Japanese custom of appreciating cherry blossoms, a tradition deeply connected with Japanese culture, poetry, and painting.
The delicate Sakura blossoms symbolize beauty, renewal, the arrival of spring, and the fleeting nature of life. The figures and surrounding landscape add narrative interest, reflecting the traditional Japanese genre of landscape and figure painting (Sansui Jinbutsu-zu).
The work is presented in traditional hanging-scroll format and fitted with bone roller ends (骨軸), adding an elegant finishing detail to its presentation.
This painting would appeal to collectors of Japanese Nihonga, Bijin-ga, Sakura imagery, seasonal paintings, and antique hanging scrolls. It would be particularly suitable for display in a tokonoma during the spring season.
As an antique work, it may show stains, foxing, fading, creases, discoloration, minor tears, repairs, or wear to the silk and mounting. Please examine all photographs carefully for the painting, inscriptions or seals, bone roller ends, dimensions, and overall condition. The precise age and artist should be independently assessed.
