Hagi ware tea set from Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, in its original kiri wood box, comprising six small cups, a lidded side-handled pot, a yuzamashi pouring bowl, and a small tray, all in stoneware with a cream-pink crackle glaze, made by Tamori at the Daika-zan Kiln for Tenmaya; dimensions 25 × 22 × 13 cm; excellent vintage condition.
Description from the seller
a Hagi-yaki tea set in its original paulownia (kiri) wood box, and the blue label is from Tenmaya, a Japanese department store.
The label: Tenmaya (天満屋) is a department store chain founded in Okayama. The label lists its locations: Okayama, Kurashiki, Fukuyama, and Hiroshima (岡山・倉敷・福山・広島). It’s a retailer’s sticker, so it tells you where the set was sold. The style suggests mid-20th century, roughly 1960s to 70s
The set: The soft cream-and-pink glaze, the crackle, and the exposed reddish clay at the foot rings are typical of Hagi ware from Yamaguchi Prefecture. It includes:
6 small cups (yunomi or guinomi) 5 cm x 5 cm
A lidded side-handled pot (hōhin/kyūsu style) 8 cm x 8 cm
A pouring bowl (yuzamashi), used to cool the water 5 cm high, 10 cm long
A small saucer or tray 2 cm x 10 cm
Box 25 cm x 22 cm x 13 cm
