Description from the seller
VERNE, JULES.
Michel Strogoff. From Moscow to Irkutsk. Followed by A Drama in Mexico. Paris: J. Hetzel et Cie.
Grand octavo. Publisher's binding in red percaline, of the 'à deux éléphants' type, front board hot-stamped in black and gold, sophisticated borders, spine adorned with gold compartments.
A magnificent illustrated edition of this great classic from Jules Verne's Voyages Extraordinaires, which recounts the heroic journey of the Tsar's courier across rebellious Siberia.
This volume bears the famous and sought-after publisher's binding known as the 'à deux éléphants,' designed by Alfred Lenormand and bound by Engel, representing the golden age of Romantic and adventure publishing in the 19th century at Hetzel. The interior is rich with splendid engravings signed by J. Férat and engraved by Charles Barbant.
Binding in red percaline presenting colors of striking liveliness, with rubbing and minor wear to the corners and headcaps, spine solid. The gilding on the front board and the spine is brilliant and well contrasted. The interior shows foxing scattered (common on this paper production), complete with all its engravings and Hetzel's end-of-volume catalogue for 1888–1889.
A superb collectible copy of this Vernian masterwork.
