Description from the seller
The Ships on the Open Sea
Antique oil paintings Maritime art Wonderful work by the Danish marine painter Carl Vilhelm Willy Bille signed from the years 1915-1920
Carl Vilhelm "Willy" Bille (* 17 April 1889 in Copenhagen; † 21 September 1944 in the same place) was a Danish painter. He painted mainly maritime subjects, still lifes and landscapes – especially scenes from Copenhagen.
Willy Bille initially taught himself painting, later became a pupil of his father Vilhelm Bille and studied as a scholarship holder from 1928 at the Art Academy in Copenhagen and in Paris.
The pictures by Willy Bille, influenced by the style of French Impressionism, were exhibited on numerous occasions (e.g., several times between 1912 and 1938 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at Charlottenborg Castle) and are today in museums and private collections – inside and outside Denmark. In 1925 Willy Bille received the Carlson Prize, in 1930 the Lis Jacobsen Prize.
Carl Vilhelm Bille used the name Willy to avoid confusion with his father Vilhelm Bille and his grandfather Carl Bille – both also well-known painters.
As a signature (monogram) Willy Bille used "WB" or "WBille" – whereby the right stroke of the "W" forms the left stroke of the "B" – and the stroke of the "B" twists into the lower belly of the "B" or is drawn far downward.
Oil painting on canvas painted with oil colors with antique 24K yellow gold solid wood frame
Dimensions with frame: 53.5 x 42.5 cm, without frame: 37 x 26 cm
Signature: Bottom right "Willy Bille" signed.
Condition: Used, in good condition, with signs of aging.
