Description from the seller
Magnificent decorative vase in the shape of a gourd in Japanese Kutani porcelain. We have the signature "Nishikiu sei" which proves that our vase dates from the late 19th century Meiji period (1868-1912). Nishikiu was an artisan in Kutani at the end of the 19th century.
The shape of this vase evokes a calabash, which evokes longevity and prosperity in Asian tradition. This piece of great aesthetic quality is a remarkable witness to the refinement of Japanese ceramics under the Meiji era, a period during which Kutani studios reached heights of virtuosity for export to the West.
The decorations in bright gold and in Kutani's typical red feature traditional flowers or traditionally Japanese designs.
In very good condition.
Large impressive format of 45 cm tall.
