Description from the seller
Vintage Japanese lacquered wooden box – Decor of blooming plum blossoms and mother-of-pearl inlays – Japan – Shōwa period
Elegant old Japanese box with lid, lacquered wood, probably dating from the Shōwa period (1926–1989), likely from the mid or second half of the 20th century.
This square box stands out for its magnificent finish in reddish-brown, mahogany and dark brown tones, with subtle color variations revealing fine horizontal lines.
The lid is adorned with a traditional Japanese motif depicting an old plum tree trunk with winding branches, accompanied by delicate plum blossoms (ume) and flower buds.
The flowers are highlighted with delicate gold details, while several buds feature small iridescent inlays, probably nacre (raden), reflecting shades of blue, green and purple.
In Japanese culture, the plum tree symbolizes perseverance, renewal and the arrival of spring.
The interior of the box and lid is covered with a dark, glossy finish.
This piece could have served as a storage box for small objects, accessories or personal effects.
