AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

French painter in Rome in the early 1800s, follower of Raphael

Extraordinary and monumental akademic drawing from the mid-19th century depicting the biblical scene "God appears to Isaac" (Genesis 26), faithful and masterful copy of a translation drawn from the celebrated fresco executed by Raphael Sanzio and his workshop (1518-1519) for the Vatican Loggias, as shown by the last photo in the advertisement.

The work stands out for its technical execution of the highest level, typical of the finest 19th-century Academies of Fine Arts.

The true strength of the piece lies in the magistral brushwork in white lead.

A large-format work, with exceptional stage presence and very high decorative value, perfect for Old Masters and academic drawings collectors.

On the back there is an important pencil inventory note indicating the dating and scope: "French draughtsman in Rome / Early quarter of the 19th century."

The years between 1800 and 1825 coincide with the great era of French painters who won the prestigious Prix de Rome, a prestigious state scholarship established in France in 1663 under the reign of Louis XIV and his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert. The winners were offered a period of study and residence in Rome, at the French Academy (later housed at Villa Medici), lasting 3 to 5 years, to deepen study of classical art and the Renaissance.

Important format: 51.00 cm x 44.50 cm. A generous and exceptional size for period drawings, giving the work a strong visual and decorative impact.
- Total dimensions (with frame): 64.00 cm x 59.00 cm
- Condition: Overall very good for the sheet’s age. The figures and the center of the composition retain excellent sharpness. Noted are the physiological and fascinating signs of time, including widespread foxing dots (natural brown blooming of antique paper) concentrated mainly in the sky, and historical perimetral paper reinforcements on the back, typical of period mounts.

The drawing is housed in an elegant dark wood frame with an ochre-colored mat and protective glass, ready for display. (Note: the frame is considered a piece of furnishing supplied free of charge.)
