Biography
The Poetics: "The Chamber of Wonders"
La ricerca di Pagano è strettamente legata al concetto di Wunderkammer (Camera delle Meraviglie). Le sue opere sono spesso concepite come spazi mentali dove si fondono:
Classicism and Pop: Elements of Greek and Renaissance statuary are reinterpreted with dense colors and contemporary symbolism.
Alchemy and Philosophy: The artist explores the enigma of existence through dreamlike figures (such as his famous "Swan Women") and Hermetic references.
Matter: He uses mixed powders to achieve a chromatic compactness that gives the canvases a quasi-sculptural dimension.
Achievements and Recognitions
Although his exhibition career truly took off around 2011, he quickly reached internationally significant milestones:
Venice Biennale: He exhibited at the 56th edition (2015) within the show "Grazie Italia" at the Guatemala Pavilion.
Rome Triennial: Participation in the Visual Arts Exposition of the Triennial in 2014.
Publications: His work is included in Mondadori's Catalogo d'Arte Moderna (CAM) and in the Atlante dell'Arte Contemporanea by De Agostini.
International Presence: His works have been shown in prestigious venues such as the Altes Dampfbad Museum in Baden-Baden, Germany, and at Art Market in Budapest.
In addition to being a painter and sculptor, Pagano is an expert connoisseur of antique art. This passion is reflected in the way he “recovers” the past, not to copy it, but to transform it into a grotesque and fascinating language that speaks of the contradictions of the modern man.
Suspended Presence
"Presenza Sospesa" presents itself as a deep exploration of the human figure, suspended between figurative realism and a symbolic and ethereal atmosphere.
Figurative Description
The work depicts the bust of a young woman in three-quarter twist, emerging from a dark and undefined background. The face is dominated by a cap (or turban) of a vivid red, framing the delicate features of the face. The elongated, sinuous neck leads the gaze to the bare shoulders, restrained only by the delicate straps of a red dress.
Light and Color: A warm, theatrical light highlights the face, reflecting on the scarlet lips and creating intense pink and red tones on the skin. Precious details, such as the small pearly earring and the pendant at the neck, add pinpoint points of light.
Gaze: The light eyes, clear and penetrating, are directed straight at the viewer, fixing an intimate and magnetic point of contact.
Critical Analysis
On a critical level, the work fits Pagano's stylistic signature, characterized by a continuous dialogue between classical figuration and intimate expressiveness.
Temporal and Psychic Suspension: The title "Presenza Sospesa" captures the essence of the work: the figure does not seem to belong to a defined space or time, but exists in a contemplative and motionless state.
Classic and Modern Legacy: The composition evokes Renaissance and Mannerist memory — evident in the elongated neck — yet read with a contemporary dramatic sensibility, intensified by a palette dominated by reds and a stark contrast with the dark background.
The Mystery of Encounter: The painting transcends simple portraiture to become a meditation on vulnerability and inner strength; the gaze does not reveal everything, preserving a threshold of shadow and mystery that invites the observer to introspection.
