This is a rustic wabi-sabi style tea ware, a hand-painted Kissou grass chawan created by the artist of Shoryuji Kiln during the Mid Heisei era. It is a formal matcha bowl for Japanese tea ceremony, suitable for tea gatherings, daily tea tasting and tea room display. Its calm and simple aesthetic perfectly fits the atmosphere of a wabi-sabi tea space.
The exterior is decorated with hand-painted Kissou grass. Kissou grass is a classic motif in Japanese tea culture, conveying elegant and poetic scenery of wild plants. The bowl is hand-thrown, retaining natural uneven textures formed during shaping. The creamy white glaze surface features slender grass leaves, pink flower buds and delicate gold accents, covered with fine natural ice-style crackle. A few natural suname (砂目) grains from the clay body are visible through the glaze, giving an earthy, primitive texture.
Impressed seal mark of Shoryuji Kiln on the foot. The lid of original paulownia tomobako (共箱) bears handwritten inscription "Kissou grass Chawan (茶盌)" and Shoryuji Kiln seal. The marks on box and bowl match each other.
There is an old sticker inside the bowl from Japanese antique dealer “Baisel (バイセル)”, a collection mark from previous circulation.
Comes with the original paulownia tomobako, a yellow storage cloth, and a matching bamboo tea whisk for full tea ceremony use.
Due to age, natural glaze crazing is present. No cracks or repairs. The paulownia tomobako shows dust and age-related wear from storage. Overall in good condition for its age.
