Description from the seller
Set of 8 Antique French Linen Napkins – M.F. Initials
This elegant set of eight antique French linen napkins, each bearing the hand-embroidered initials M.F., dates from the early 20th century.
Their period can be identified by the characteristic damier damask weave, a traditional French design resembling a chessboard. At the time, this understated geometric pattern was particularly popular, offering a more restrained alternative to the elaborate hunting scenes, intricate arabesques and fruit motifs found in other French table linens.
Such more elaborate designs were often reserved for the grand tables of bourgeois households, where beautifully appointed dining tables were an expression of refinement, status and good taste.
What distinguishes these napkins is their double-outlined initials, which lend them a particularly elegant appearance, adding definition, character and a certain panache.
Each initial has been meticulously hand-embroidered in delicate, single petit-point cross-stitch. The workmanship is especially evident when viewed from the reverse of the fabric, as shown in the accompanying photograph.
A charming example of traditional French table linen, these napkins combine the simplicity of the damier weave with the personal touch of hand embroidery — an understated elegance that remains timeless.
