Chess set

vintage hand-carved wooden chess sets, typical of traditional Indian artistic craftsmanship.
The pieces are made with a very characteristic oriental figurative design:
• Kings and Queens are depicted as imposing parade elephants carrying a howdah, completed by small pointed white inserts that imitate the tusks.
• Knights are represented by mounted riders, and Pawns by kneeling seated figures, probably rowers or servants.
• The materials used are two contrasting wood species: a light wood (very often sandalwood or boxwood) and a dark wood (traditionally ebony or Indian-stained palisander/rosewood).
