Michael Cooper is a former American basketball player and is considered one of the best defensive players in NBA history. He became particularly well known as a key member of the legendary “Showtime Lakers” of the 1980s. Cooper stood out for his exceptional defense, versatility, and his ability to neutralize the opponent’s best offensive players.
His entire NBA career (1978–1990) was spent with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he, together with Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and James Worthy, formed one of the most successful teams in NBA history. With the Lakers he won a total of five NBA championships (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988) and was an important part of the team as a defensive specialist as well as a reliable long-range shooter.
Among his greatest personal achievements are the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award (1987) and eight selections to the NBA All-Defensive Team, five times to the First Team and three times to the Second Team. Although Cooper was never nominated for an NBA All-Star Game, he was highly regarded for his defensive qualities. After his NBA career he also played in Italy for Virtus Roma.
Cooper was also successful as a coach. With the Los Angeles Sparks he won two WNBA championships in 2001 and 2002 and was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2000.
In 2024, Michael Cooper was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. With five NBA championships, the award as the league's best defender, and his achievements as a coach, he is regarded as one of the most significant figures in Lakers history and as one of the outstanding defensive specialists in basketball.
