Description from the seller
Oil painting on canvas titled "Guardian of the Seabreeze" - 2026
Imagine this seascape in your interior.
This painting offers a very expressive interpretation of a maritime landscape with a lighthouse.
The work sits directly in the lineage of the Fauves. Colors are used pure, vibrant, and non-realistic to express emotion rather than reproduce photographic accuracy.
The shapes are strongly delineated by broad black or dark strokes. This thick contour structures the composition and recalls stained glass or enamel techniques.
The paint is applied generously, probably with a knife or a wide brush, giving relief and texture to the canvas.
Contrast is built on the juxtaposition of primary and complementary colors (deep ultramarine blue, incandescent red/orange, vivid yellow and touches of green at the base). The incandescent sky in the background literally ignites the scene.
The composition opposes the slender verticality of the lighthouse to the horizontal form of the guardian’s house. The architectural forms are simplified to the verge of geometric simplification.
Light has no single source; it emanates directly from the saturation of pigments. This gives the scene an intense, almost magical or dramatic twilight atmosphere.
Painting by Breton artist Yves Decaudan - 1954
The artist’s work is part of a figurative, colorful vein, heavily influenced by Fauvism and the Pont-Aven school, with a particular attachment to coastal Breton scenes.
His works regularly depict moments of calm, reading, or daydreaming outdoors, in a maritime setting where time seems suspended.
The artist’s work is characterized by expressive, poetic figuration, driven by a keen sense of color and the synthesis of forms. The artist favors flat areas of pure, intense color — such as this deep blue juxtaposed with bright red — creating an immediate and luminous visual tension.
Elements of the setting are outlined and simplified, going to the essentials without dwelling on anatomical detail or strict realism, which brings his work closer to Fauvism or art posters. His subjects, often solitary and maritime, convey a sense of stillness, serenity, or daydream suspended in time.
Through backgrounds worked with texture or speckled with light touches, he creates a poetic depth rather than a geometric one.
Paintings exhibited in numerous private collections in Europe, North America, Africa, and Oceania, canvas shown at the Paris Autumn Salon - 2022
Delivered with certificate of authenticity
Acrylic on cotton canvas, wooden stretcher, unframed, dimensions 80 x 80 cm
