Description from the seller
A Classic French Linen Tea Towel — With a Twist
Another variation on the ever-popular classic French linen tea towel.
First produced in the mid-19th century, these practical yet beautifully woven towels became an instant favourite in French households. The looms could barely produce them quickly enough, and French pantries and kitchens were soon filled with them.
By the 1920s, however, tastes had changed. The old linens were carefully folded away in the great Normandy armoires, as fashion turned towards checks, bold stripes and more adventurous colours.
Today, this wonderful old-fashioned look has been rediscovered by a new generation in France. The armoires have once again been opened, and these beautifully made linen kitchen towels are enjoying a genuine revival.
They are particularly attractive in a French country kitchen, where their simplicity, generous proportions and traditional character feel completely at home.
This is a set of six fine linen towels, distinguished by not one but two blood-red vertical striped borders.,
each with 4 thin lines. The initials “M.M.” have been particularly well and hand embroidered onto the linen, adding a very personal touch.
They are generously sized and have come straight from the armoire, having been carefully stored away for many years. As with many linens that have been kept untouched, they will need a little refreshing and laundering before use.
A charming and authentic piece of old French kitchen linen — practical, decorative and increasingly difficult to find as a complete set of six
