First edition of this dictionary published anonymously under three asterisks. Dom Nicolas Alexandre, Benedictine of the Congregation of Saint-Maur, gathers here the substances used in pharmaceutical practice and their preparations. The title expressly designates the work for young pharmacists and surgeons, for hospitals, for communities, and for charitable people tending the poor.

The entries, alphabetically arranged, mix medical botany with substances of mineral and animal origin. They combine the designation of substances, properties attributed to remedies, preparation methods, and therapeutic uses. Absinthe, mandrake, poppy, and other medicinal plants stand alongside crystals, animals, and pharmaceutical compositions. An alphabetical table makes it possible to locate entries and their synonyms.

One volume in full brown morocco, spine with raised bands ornamented with florets and gilded borders, red title label. Format 15x21 cm.

Copy bearing the stamp of the René König Library, with handwritten notes on the flyleaf and an old signature on the title.

Condition: worn binding, leather rubbed and epidermized, joints split, headcaps damaged with losses; corners worn. Paper browned in places, with some stains and old marks.
