Description from the seller
Vintage sterling silver photo frame with a contrast finish, Sydney Bicentennial 1788-1988, London 1987.
This vintage sterling silver photo frame with a contrast finish, commemorating the Sydney Bicentennial, is in very good condition. The frame design features flowers, fruits, seeds and a kangaroo. The Bicentennial dates (1788-1988) are inscribed on a wavy ribbon at the top of the frame. The back and the royal blue velvet stand are in good condition. The contrast marks at the bottom left are crisp and clear, dating the frame to London, 1987.
RBB (the mark on the far left) Maker's Mark: The unique initials of the silverware workshop that registered the piece with the London Assay Office. The RBB maker was active from the late 1960s to the 1990s, specializing in silver photo frames and book covers.
Along the same line (next to RBB) are three official marks of the British state:
- Leopard head: The symbol of the London Assay Office.
- Britannia mark (figure of a woman with a trident): Indicates a higher and less common silver purity: Britannia silver of fineness 958. This means it contains 95.8% pure silver (higher than the traditional 92.5% sterling silver).
- Letter N: The year-letter of the London Assay Office, certifying 1987 as the year of manufacture.
- Diamond right (R 1987 B) Commemorative Mark: A special diamond-shaped mark with letters and numbers inside. The UK Assay Offices minted these additional marks in limited editions to celebrate important historical events (in this case, in anticipation of Australia’s official bicentennial celebration in 1988).
Photo size: 12 x 7.5 cm;
Frame size: 20.5 x 15.3 cm;
Weight: 311 g.
