Description from the seller
European neo-expressionist school, 20th century
Female figure in an abstract composition
Interesting oil painting from the European neo-expressionist school of the 20th century, representing a composition of a figurative-abstract character in which the presence of a female silhouette integrated among geometric planes, intense color contrasts, and a rich variety of textures stands out.
The work presents a complex visual organization built through the superposition of rectangular forms, vertical and horizontal lines, color surfaces, and gestural strokes. Among these elements there is a suggestion of a female figure, partially fragmented and fused with the pictorial space, which constitutes one of the main points of interest of the composition.
The representation of the human body deliberately moves away from naturalistic canons. Its contours appear decomposed, interrupted, and reconstructed through different color planes, establishing an interesting dialogue between figuration and abstraction.
One of the most notable aspects of the painting is its extraordinary chromatic intensity. Deep blues and turquoises predominate, combined with bright yellows, orange-reddish tones, whites, and blacks. These hues create strong contrasts that contribute dynamism, depth, and notable visual energy.
The execution reveals a free and expressive brushwork, with overlays of paint, pigment smears, transparencies, scrapes, and lines that cross the different planes of the composition. The surface thus gains considerable visual richness, in which each layer seems to preserve part of the artist’s creative process.
From a stylistic point of view, the work shows clear affinities with figurative neo-expressionism, a movement that, during the last decades of the 20th century, revived the importance of gesture, emotional intensity, and pictorial freedom.
Likewise, post-Cubist influences can be appreciated, especially in the fragmentation of the human figure and in the organization of space through superimposed geometric planes. This conception allows simultaneously representing different forms and structures, moving away from traditional perspective.
The painting also shows a certain proximity to European informalism and gestural abstraction, perceptible in the experimental treatment of the surface, the combination of textures, and the importance given to the spontaneity of execution.
It is especially interesting how the female silhouette emerges and disappears among the abstract structures, inviting the viewer to progressively discover the shapes and establish different interpretations of the composition.
The artist seems to seek a balance between geometric structure and gestural freedom, using the human figure as an articulating element of an essentially contemporary pictorial language.
The vertical arrangement of the work, 42 × 73 cm, reinforces the presence of the figure and accentuates the upward movement of the lines and color planes.
The result is a painting of great expressive force, notable color richness, and marked visual personality, where different trends of 20th-century European painting converge.
An especially attractive work for its combination of figuration and abstraction, its dynamic treatment of pictorial matter, and its ability to suggest human presence through a language of fragmented forms and intense colors.
