Description from the seller
Pasquier Quesnel – The New Testament in French – 1705 – 8 complete volumes – Old bindings
Remarkable bibliophilic collection from the early 18th century, comprising the eight complete volumes of the New Testament in French, with moral reflections on each verse, a major work by the theologian Pasquier Quesnel (1634–1719).
Edition and features:
- Year: 1705, under the reign of Louis XIV.
- Publisher: André Pralard, Paris.
- Edition: New augmented edition.
- Composition: 4 parts bound into 8 volumes.
- Bindings: Old dark brown leather, spine with raised bands, gilded lettering and numbering.
- Condition: Complete set, pages intact and bindings well attached. Leather wear and rubbing, some losses at the headcaps, in keeping with the age of the works.
Exceptional historical interest:
This edition predates the famous papal bull Unigenitus of 1713, condemning 101 propositions arising from Quesnel’s reflections, a major event in the history of French Jansenism.
The title pages notably bear approbation mentions from Cardinal de Noailles, Archbishop of Paris, as well as the royal privilege.
An ancient set of over 320 years, presenting real historical and bibliophilic interest for collectors of religious books, Port-Royal publications, and editions of the Ancien Régime.
Sale of the eight volumes as a united, complete, and homogeneous collection.
