Description from the seller
Vintage Japanese hand-carved wooden mask – Smiling Elder – Traditional Noh style – Japan – Shōwa era
Magnificent vintage Japanese decorative mask in natural wood, fully carved in relief, depicting the expressive face of a smiling elder.
This piece stands out for the delicacy of its sculpture and the beauty of its natural grain, particularly visible on the forehead, cheeks and beard.
The face features thick, arched eyebrows, slightly narrowed eyes, generous cheeks, a carefully worked mustache and a long pointed beard adorned with fine geometric incisions.
The forehead is decorated with two circular relief carvings and three horizontal incisions, adding an original touch to the composition.
The gentle and benevolent expression of the character evokes traditional representations of elders in Japanese folk art, notably masks inspired by Noh theater.
The mask is crafted in honey-colored wood, with magnificent natural nuances. The different depths of carving particularly highlight the artisan workmanship.
The back is hollowed out and has a burgundy cord running through two lateral openings, enabling the mask to be hung on the wall.
Estimated period: Shōwa era, probably around the 1960s–1980s. This dating remains indicative in the absence of a signature or documentation allowing confirmation of the exact age.

Height: 26 cm
Width: 16.5 cm
Depth: 8.5 cm
