Description from the seller

Exceptional oil on panel from a Spanish or Italian school of the 17th century, possibly related to the circle of José de Ribera, one of the great representatives of European Baroque naturalism and tenebrism.

The work represents the bust of a saint or elderly religious figure, captured in a moment of deep contemplation, with the gaze directed upward. The composition concentrates all attention on the face, which emerges powerfully from the dark background thanks to an intense and carefully directed light.

The painting shows extremely high pictorial quality, especially evident in the extraordinary modelling of the face, the expressiveness of the gaze, and the treatment of the flesh tones. The rich gradation of ochres, earth tones, and warm lights gives the character notable depth, volume, and a strong psychological and spiritual intensity.

Stylistically, the work fully aligns with the tenebrist and naturalist tradition of the 17th‑century Baroque, showing important affinities with José de Ribera’s painting and his circle. The pronounced naturalism of the model, the monumentality of the head, the dramatism of the expression, and, especially, the strong contrast between the illuminated areas and the almost black background have clear parallels in the pictorial language developed by Ribera and widely disseminated in both Spain and Italy.

The painting is oil on panel, the support formed by several joined wooden panels, the vertical joints visible on the surface. It features a rich and attractive craquelure, as well as wear and various signs typical of the passage of time.

Its state of conservation is consistent with its age. The surface shows accumulated dirt, varnish oxidation, and different alterations and old interventions. We believe the work would notably benefit from a professional cleaning and restoration, which could allow a greater chromatic depth, luminosity, contrast, and numerous nuances currently partly concealed beneath the surface layers.

Overall, it is a painting of extraordinary expressive power and very high pictorial quality, highly representative of the tenebrist naturalism developed between Spain and Italy during the 17th century.

The work is presented with an old wooden frame, which complements the painting well and shows wear, losses, and signs of the passage of time. The frame is included as a gift, with no commercial value, and is not considered an integral part of the work, so any possible damage to the frame during transport will not be a basis for a claim.

The photographs are an integral part of the description and allow a detailed appreciation of the current state of preservation of the work.

The reference to the circle of José de Ribera is presented as an stylistic approximation and not as a certified attribution, taking into account the observable pictorial characteristics of the work.
