Description from the seller
John Thomas Serres (England, 1759–1825)
General Description
A formidable maritime-themed painting executed in oil on canvas by the eminent British painter and watercolorist John Thomas Serres (1759–1825). The scene presents a dramatic and dynamic seascape with sailing vessels navigating a stormy sea under cloudy skies and changing atmospheres.
The work stands out for its technical virtuosity in depicting the swell, the movement of the water, and the rigorous detail of the ships’ rigging. Serres, considered one of the great exponents of English naval painting at the end of the 18th century and the early 19th century, shows in this piece his broad command of atmospheric light and the dramatic force of the marine nature.
A specialist painter of historical and naval themes of the English Navy, Serres received numerous awards and medals throughout his career. It is worth noting that at the Royal Academy in London two important historical works of his on naval battles are exhibited.
The piece is signed by the author and has a verified provenance, having been acquired on December 29, 2004 at the Durán Auction House in Madrid, with the official adjudication sheet attached confirming the purchase and the hammer price.
