Description from the seller
Byzantine Icon of Christ Pantocrator – Sacred Handcrafted Artwork
The Author and the Iconographic Tradition
This work was handmade by a master iconographer from Monte Sant'Angelo (FG), who earned the iconographer certificate at the historic Abbey of Santa Maria di Pulsano. It is precisely within the abbey walls that the monks have handed down to him the ancient and meticulous techniques of traditional Byzantine painting, passing on a spiritual and artistic knowledge that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Support and Realization Technique
The icon is painted directly on a rough board, respecting the traditional process of preparation and application of color inherent to the iconographic discipline, where raw wood becomes the natural, living support on which the sacred image takes shape.
Holy Blessing and Spiritual Value
The icon does not require any blessing, as it has already been blessed in the Sacred Celestial Grotto of Monte Sant'Angelo, a place unique in the world and famous for being consecrated directly by Saint Michael the Archangel and not by human hand. This work carries with it the deep spiritual charge of this sacred place.
A Window on the Divine
In Christian and Orthodox tradition, the icon is not a mere decorative object or a home ornament: it is a true 'window on the Divine.' It does not simply depict an image, but makes present the mystery it portrays, inviting prayer, meditation, and spiritual contemplation.
Theological Symbolism and Catholic Doctrine
Every detail of the Byzantine icon holds a precise theological meaning:
The Blessing Hand: Jesus holds the right hand raised in the gesture of blessing. The interlaced fingers form the Greek monogram of Christ (IC XC) and simultaneously symbolize the Dual Nature of Christ (true human and true divine nature) and the mystery of the Trinity.
The Gospel Book: Held in the left hand, it represents the Word of Life, Truth, and the Teaching brought to humanity by Christ.
The Blue Color of the Mantle (Himation): Symbolizes the Humanity with which Christ clothed Himself by descending among men.
The Crossed Halo with the Greek Letters (O Ω N): Represents divine glory and bears the inscription 'He Who Is,' affirming the eternity of God.
Technical Notes and Sale Conditions
Icon Dimensions: 30 x 40 cm.
Technique and Support: Entirely hand-painted according to traditional Byzantine painting on a rough board.
Craftsmanship and Uniqueness: Being a fully hand-made artwork, any small imperfections or slight irregularities are not defects but authentic testimonies of the piece’s uniqueness and craftsmanship.
Frame: The photograph with the frame is provided for illustrative purposes only to show a possible aesthetic presentation of the work displayed in its environment.
