Description from the seller
The wall plate offered here, titled “Reed- and Waterfowl,” dates from 1954 and was intended for primary education. The drawings are by H.J. Slijper, and the plate was issued by NV Thieme&Cie in Zutphen. This plate is part of the valued series of bird and mammal plates assembled by M.A. IJsseling and A. Scheygrond. The plate is printed on paper that was then mounted on canvas. Such plates were stored rolled.
Hendrik Johannes (Henk) Slijper (1922–2007) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and falconer. Slijper advocated nature conservation, was a painter of (shooting) birds, an illustrator of books about nature, including “Birds of Prey and Owls in Europe” by Karel Voous.
Slijper first trained as a Drawing Teacher in Amsterdam, after which he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1942. From the mid-1950s he became known, among other things, as a bird illustrator. He produced wall plates for Thieme for education and made the cover illustrations for magazines such as Het Vogeljaar, De Lepelaar, and Vogels. He also taught drawing for many years at the Gooise Academy.
The plate measures 97x65 cm and has only light signs of use along the edges, probably from storage. There is no moisture or other damage. The original wooden rods and even the original hanging string are still in excellent condition. The photographs provide a true indication of the condition of this object.
