Description from the seller
Velero en Rada
Thomas Collier (England, 1840–1891)
General Description
Exquisite and delicate watercolor on paper by the prestigious British landscape painter Thomas Collier (1840–1891). The composition features a tranquil seascape where a sailing ship moored in the harbor lowers its mainsails in warm tones, accompanied in the distance by another vessel beneath a sky of soft atmospheric hues and light clouds.
The work stands out for the technical mastery characteristic of Collier, one of the most renowned watercolorists of the Victorian era for his ability to capture luminous clarity and the subtle effects of atmosphere and the outdoors.
As documented in the cataloging historical sheet that accompanies the piece, this artist has a highly relevant exhibition trajectory: in 1881 he exhibited at the Royal Institute, in a competition in which the artist earned a decoration from Queen Victoria. Several works by this distinguished creator are part of the collections of the prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
The work is properly signed and dated by the author in the lower left corner and has fully verified provenance, having been purchased on December 29, 2004 at the Durán Auction House in Madrid, with the official adjudication sheet confirming the purchase and the hammer price attached.
