Description from the seller
Still Life with Fruits, Pheasant, and Pitcher
Oil on canvas, signed “E. Adam.”, circa 1900
WORK
A lush fruit still life on a table top against a dark background: on the left a tazza with peaches and grapes, in front a shot pheasant, in the center a pineapple, on the right a tall jug with grape leaves and light-colored grapes, in the foreground pears and peaches. Warm light from the left, the fruits painted finely and juicy, the pheasant with carefully laid plumage. Large, decorative format.
ARTIST / SIGNATURE
Signed lower right in red “E. Adam.” The signature fits Emma Adam (born 1871 in Dresden), who is listed in the Künstlerlexikon Vollmer as a painter of flowers and fruits. We do not have a signature specimen for comparison; attribution is therefore probable, not certain. There is no catalog raisonné.
Technique: Oil on canvas, stretched on a prepared frame.
Image size: 70.5 x 100 cm
Framed size: 86.5 x 117 x 5.5 cm
Framed weight: 5,500 g
Signature: lower right in red “E. Adam.”
Provenance: private German collection.
CONDITION
Not cleaned, not restored. Paint layer with age craquelure, varnish yellowed. In the upper left, beside the grapevine, a small area of loss (about 1 cm) where the canvas is punctured – see detail photos. Stretcher with keys, one loosened. Back shows a label fragment with no text. Frame with small losses on the ornamental molding. Please regard the photos as part of the description.
FRAME AND HANGING
Gold-colored stucco frame with ornamental molding; the frame is part of the lot. Wire hanging; please check before installation.
SHIPPING
Rolled framed, corners and surface protected, as freight. Pick-up in Helmstedt possible.
Frame: age/usage-related nicks (scratches, wear, small losses) present, not always fully visible in photos. Frame will be delivered as an accompaniment in its current condition; the work is valued.
