Description from the seller
Carnaval
Antonio Medina (Spain, 20th century)
General Description
A colorful and lively genre scene executed in oil on panel by the Spanish painter Antonio Medina. The work depicts a festive carnival scene set in a monumental outdoor environment—a park or promenade flanked by groves, fountains, and a wrought-iron fence in the background—where multiple characters dressed in bright traditional costumes (harlequins, young men, and ladies of the era) play musical instruments and dance merrily.
The composition stands out for its dynamism, the agile brushwork of rich pictorial texture, and a vibrant color palette that contrasts with the soft tones of the sunset in the background. Medina demonstrates excellent mastery of genre painting and of interior-court and carnival scenes, capturing the festive spirit, natural light, and the colorful character of these historical celebrations.
The piece is signed by the artist in the lower left corner and bears an identifying metal plaque on the matte. It is mounted in a magnificent golden frame of grand presence and has fully traceable provenance, having been purchased on March 25, 2003 at Sala de Subastas Durán in Madrid, with the official adjudication sheet confirming the purchase and the hammer price attached.
