Description from the seller
An antique Eastern Orthodox icon depicting the Virgin of Vladimir (the Vladimir Mother of God), one of the most revered and beloved iconographic types of the Eleusa (Tenderness) style.
- Iconography: The icon beautifully captures the tender and emotional bond between the Mother of God and the Christ Child. The Infant Jesus gently presses His cheek against His mother's cheek and wraps His arm around her neck.
- Oklad / Riza: The icon is covered with a highly detailed, embossed, and chased metal oklad (riza). The decorative cover features elaborate floral and foliate borders with textured motifs. The halos (nimbi) around the Virgin and Child are adorned with an elegant golden/gilded rim, creating a beautiful contrast against the silvered background.
- Condition: Overall good antique condition with a natural patina and charming signs of age, which add to its historical character. Minor wear on the metal surface and slight tarnish consistent with age and liturgical use. The visible painted elements (the faces and hands) remain clear and expressive.
- Materials: Oil or tempera on wood panel, covered with a chased/embossed white metal alloy oklad (possibly silvered brass or copper), elements of gilding.
