Gezicht op het IJ te Amsterdam, a 1924 pastel artwork from the Netherlands, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and atmospheric work by the well-known Dutch painter Hobbe Smith (1862–1942). This painting shows a classic Dutch water landscape – a characteristic Amsterdam cityscape and waterscape on the IJ, with traditional sailing ships captured in the subtle light and the serene atmosphere for which this master is acclaimed.
The painting bears the artist's signature, though it is very faint due to the passage of time and the subtle brushstroke (almost indistinguishable to the naked eye, best viewed with magnification / a lens – see also the detail photos). Although the signature is discreet, the exceptional quality of the work largely speaks for itself: the refined brushstrokes, the masterful play of light, and the precise composition clearly testify to Hobbe Smith's hand and confirm the authenticity of this high-quality artwork.
About the artist:
Hobbe Smith (Witmarsum, December 7, 1862 – Amsterdam, May 1, 1942) was a prominent Dutch painter, watercolorist, and graphic artist. He studied at the Quellinusschool and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1888 he won the Willink van Collen Prize and in 1917 he was awarded a gold medal by Queen Wilhelmina. His dynamic harbor and water views (especially of the Amsterdam waterways) are among the absolute pinnacles of his oeuvre.
