AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

South India – Cast Bronze Statuette of the Vishnu deity – 18th century

A superb and ancient bronze statuette with a brown patina representing the Hindu deity Vishnu (or one of his avatars/consorts) in the South Indian / Tamil Nadu style.

The deity is depicted standing in a rigid pose (Samabhanga) on a circular pedestal resting on a square base. It has four arms (Chaturbhuja):

The upper hands hold his traditional attributes (the chakra/disc and the shankha/conch).

The lower right hand is extended in the gesture of welcome or blessing (Abhaya/Varada mudra).

The lower left hand leans on or holds the mace (Gada).

It is crowned with a tall characteristic conical crown (Kiritamukuta) and wears traditional clothing (dhoti) finely pleated at the legs and secured by a belt.
