AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

S.A.R. The Prince Luigi Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of the Abruzzi - THE RUWENZORI – Exploratory journey and first ascents of the highest peaks in the snow-covered range situated between the great equatorial lakes of Central Africa – Report by Dr. Filippo De Filippi, illustrated by Vittorio Sella, a member of the expedition - Milan, Hoepli 1908

in 8vo, 18 x 25 cm., blue cloth binding with titles printed in white, XI + 358 (2) pages, 1 color plate, 7 folded maps, 5 folded panoramas, 24 plates outside the text in photolithography on heavy paper and 168 photographic illustrations in the text. Excellent copy with a slight browning to the spine.

First edition of the most important work concerning the territory explored: “Récit de l'expédition du Duc des Abruzzes en Afrique tropicale, avec la première ascension du Ruwenzori et de plusieurs autres sommets de la région en 1906” (Perret). In the same year it was translated into English and published in London and New York, and the following year appeared in French in Paris. Original edition. The expedition was organized with great speed under the impulse of the competitive spirit that animated the Duke of the Abruzzi. "The entire chain, about which reliable knowledge had been available for less than twenty years, was completely explored. This is justified by the perfect organizational spirit of the Expedition Commander".

Index: introductory note (Rome, April 1908) - The discovery and the precursors - Preparation and departure of the Expedition from Italy - From Naples to Entebbe - From Entebbe to Fort Portal - The Mobuku Valley - From Fort Portal to Bujongolo - The summits at the head of the Mobuku Valley - The summits of the central group - Constitution and general maps of the Ruwenzori range - Exploration of the Speke and Emin Mountains - Ascents on the Stanley, Luigi di Savoia and Baker Mountains - Exploration of the Bujuku Valley and Mount Gessi - Return of the Expedition - Appendix A - Dr. L. Hugues - The Moon Mountains of Tolomeo's Geography and the Ruwenzori chain - Appendix B - Astronomical, geodetic and meteorological observations (P. Campigli - Report on astronomical observations - P. Campigli - Geodetic Measurements - Prof. D. Omodei - Report on meteorological observations and altimetry) - Magnetic Observations (Note).

Careful packing, fast and trackable shipping.
