Description from the seller
B. HISTORY of the Model:
Founded in Geneva in 1920-1922, Cornavin is a Swiss watch brand known for pioneering the "big date" display and, later, for marketing Soviet-made movements in the 1970s-'80s. Named after Geneva's central district, the brand blended Swiss design with affordable, often Soviet-produced, mechanical movements, before reviving as a modern Swiss-made brand.
Key Historical Phases
• Origin (1920s): Established in Geneva, Switzerland, the brand specialized in high-quality, hand-assembled mechanical watches, gaining recognition for its attention to detail.
• The "Big Date" & Golden Age (1950s–1960s):Cornavin gained popularity for technical innovation, most notably introducing the Datocor, a wristwatch featuring a distinctive two-window "big date" display. Another significant model was the P810 diver, which featured a decompression dial and rotating hour disc.
• Soviet Partnership (1970s–1980s): During the quartz crisis, Cornavin shifted to importing Soviet movements to maintain affordability, branding them as Swiss-designed for international export. These watches, often featuring movements from Poljot, Raketa, Slava, and Luch, were, ironically, produced in the USSR but targeted Western and Spanish markets.
• Modern Era (2010s–Present): Re-established as an independent, family-owned Swiss watch brand, Cornavin is now based in Zurich, focusing on luxury-design sports watches that are "Swiss Made".
•
Key Characteristics of Vintage Cornavin Watches
• Soviet Collaboration: Many vintage Cornavins from the 1970s and 80s are actually Soviet watches, sometimes featuringday-wheels in Spanish.
• Models: Notable vintage models included the Datocor and the P810 diver.
• Movements: Used reliable, high-jewel Soviet calibers, such as the 2428 (25 jewels) and 2614.2H (17 jewels).
