Description from the seller

Authentic ceremonial yam mask, skillfully handwoven from natural plant fibers. Masks of this type were used during traditional yam harvest ceremonies, when the largest and most impressive yams were elaborately decorated and publicly displayed. The cultivation of exceptionally large yams was a source of great prestige and demonstrated the grower’s skill, status and spiritual strength within the community.

The mask was placed on a prized yam, transforming it symbolically into a powerful ancestral or spiritual being. Its expressive form and open woven structure are characteristic of these ephemeral ceremonial objects, which were made from locally available organic materials.

Dating from the 1970s and field collected in the 1980s. An authentic and evocative example of traditional ceremonial art associated with yam cultivation and harvest rituals.

Height: 36 cm.
