Description from the seller
Mandilény (Joseph-Louis).
Essays on the preservation of the health of people in warfare. Thesis presented and defended at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, on June 29, 1820, to obtain the degree of Doctor of Medicine.
Paris, Imprimerie de Didot Jeune, 1820.
In-4°, 52 pp. Uncut, untrimmed brochure. Some foxing and light stains, small marginal loss on the first leaf, good copy in its original condition.
Rare medical thesis devoted to military hygiene, defended in the wake of the Napoleonic wars. Originating from Fribourg (Switzerland) and former mathematics professor at the Royal College of Tournon, Joseph-Louis Mandilény studies the means of preventing disease in the armies: barracks hygiene, alimentation, contagion, regimental infirmaries, convalescence and the organization of the health service. Relying on Hippocrates and on the experience of military campaigns, he advocates a fundamentally preventive medicine, foreshadowing the developments of military hygiene during the 19th century.
Printed by Didot Jeune, printer to the Faculty of Medicine, this thesis holds particular interest for the history of military medicine, public health, and medical institutions under the Restoration. Scarce on the market.
