Saint Jerome in His Study, an oil on panel painting dated 1518 in the Flemish School, attributed to a follower of Jan Sanders van Hemessen, from Belgium, measuring 53 × 42 cm with frame and sold with the illustrated frame.
Description from the seller
Manner of Jan Sanders van Hemessen – Saint Jerome in His Study – Flemish School, Early 16th Century, Inscribed 1518
An early Flemish oil painting on wooden panel depicting Saint Jerome as a monk in his study. The work bears the date 1518 within the composition and is offered with an attribution to a follower of Jan Sanders van Hemessen.
The composition closely resembles, in reverse, a depiction of Saint Jerome as a monk associated with Van Hemessen. This compositional affinity supports the proposed attribution.
A rare devotional panel with an intimate format and the distinctive character of early Flemish painting.
Iconography and symbolism
Saint Jerome is shown in his study, a setting associated with his scholarship and translation of the Bible into Latin. The skull serves as a memento mori, a reminder of mortality and the transient nature of earthly life. The crucifix directs his contemplation towards Christ’s sacrifice and salvation.
His hand held against his chest suggests devotion, humility and penitence. Together, these elements present Jerome as both a scholar and a penitent saint, reflecting on faith, death and eternal life.
