Description from the seller
Antique 19th-Century "Peg-in" / Peg-in Chess Set Made of Bone – Fully Complete (ca. 1880)
Description
Beautifully preserved and fully complete antique "peg-in" (peg) travel chess set from the second half of the 19th century (ca. 1840-1890).
The chess pieces are hand-turned and finely carved from antique bone. One side retains the natural white color, the other side is traditionally stained deep red. The pieces are produced in the recognizable and beloved French "Regence" / "Barleycorn"-like style, recognizable by the elegant construction and the characteristic form of the knights and rooks.
This type of compact travel sets was used in the 19th century during journeys by coach or train. Thanks to the fine wooden pegs under the pieces, they stayed stable in the holes of the board, even during movement.
Unique provenance
What is special about this piece is the handwritten inscription on the inside of the wooden box: "Firmin De Veirman". This gives the object a wonderful tangible history and proves that it was a cherished personal possession.
Condition
• Chess pieces: Excellent antique condition. The set is 100% complete (32 pieces). All original underlying pegs are present and intact (no broken pegs). The bone shows a beautiful, authentic age patina.
• Box/Board: The wooden folding box closes well and the original metal latch is present and functional. The felt on the inside is neat. The wood shows light, normal signs of age and wear that match the age and authenticity of the object.
Specifications
• Material: Hand-carved bone / bone & wood
• Box size (closed): 15.6 cm (length) x 7.4 cm (width)
• Total weight: 150 grams
A beautiful and rare complete collectible for the enthusiast of antique chess sets and historic travel heritage.
