Description from the seller
Annik Le Page is a French painter. A student of Waltraud Sonilet and Oskar Kokoschka, Annik Le Page has always painted portraits of women whose femininity navigates between two contradictions: grace and beauty as attributes of the eternal feminine, and also the refusal to be seen as symbols of seduction in order to gain powers previously reserved for men. This is reflected in the mixed techniques she uses: oil, the seal of the past, blended with mortar (sand) — an incongruous material on her women's faces but a sign here of solidity and change.
This work, titled "Double Je", expresses the duality of a woman both facing front and in profile at the same time.
Purchased for 700€ in an art gallery in Brussels where the artist was exhibiting in 1998, today the artist's canvases fetch between 1,000€ and 1,500€ at auction.
