France, Early XXth Century Marriage bed linen with S.M. initials, linen, white, 3.20 m by 2.00 m, dating to 1930–1940, in excellent condition, monogram S.M. about 13 cm high with a floral motif.
Description from the seller
This bed linen was, without doubt, embroidered as a wedding gift for the newlyweds to use during their honeymoon period.
The initials, S .M. measuring approximately 13 cm in height, are embroidered in high relief, standing out prominently against the fine linen background. Between the initials is a charming and romantic arrangement of flowers, beautifully tied together with a ribbon and bow.
No additional decoration was considered necessary, as the giver and embroiderer of the bed linen chose to exercise tasteful restraint, allowing the elegant monogram and floral motif to remain the focal point of the piece.
This is a particularly fine and distinctive example of embroidered bed linen, reflecting both exceptional craftsmanship and the sentimental significance of a traditional marriage gift.
Having remained carefully stored in a wedding armoire for many years, the linen will benefit from gentle laundering and pressing before being returned to use or displayed on a bed.
