Description from the seller

Late XIXth Century Linen Table Linen

This late XIXth Century linen table linen is a wonderful example of French decorative linen, where craftsmanship and elegance take centre stage.

Its particular charm lies in the combination of the large square lace panels and the extensive Ajour de Venise open thread work, which runs along the top and sides. It is very much a decorative piece, designed to be admired as much as used.

For decades, it adorned one of the smaller dining tables at the château close to where I live in France. It was part of the setting for many family Sunday lunches — an important French tradition when the entire family gathers around the table. It has therefore been very much loved and cared for by its owners, but the time has now come for it to find a new home and for another owner to take over its care.

The central section features a rectangular panel framed with open thread work, surrounded by two rows of Ajour de Venise, beautifully held together by six large square lace motifs.

The same decorative language continues along the sides with another large lace square placed in each corner, creating a very balanced and elegant composition. Finally the edgings again have a single row of open thread work

Condition:
The delicate lace motifs are in perfect order. The single open-thread work has been carefully restored at various points, while the Ajour de Venise remains in good condition. The linen itself is also in good condition.

The piece comes straight from the château armoire. As with all antique linen, I recommend giving it a gentle refresh before dressing your table.

A charming and highly decorative piece of French linen with a wonderful château provenance — ready to begin its next chapter.
