Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Alcalá de Henares, baptized on 9 October 1547 – Madrid, 22 April 1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, playwright, and soldier, famous for his satirical novel Don Quixote, which was published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. This novel is by many considered the first modern novel due to its innovative narrative structure, realistic character development, and exploration of illusion versus reality. It is regarded as one of the greatest works of world literature, and the number of editions and translations thereof is surpassed only by the Bible.
