Tim Atkin . vintage 2023.
Ojo Gallo comes from a small vineyard planted in 1957 in Cárdenas (Alto Najerilla), where similar percentages of red and white grape varieties grow together. We have crafted it by blending both types of grapes, just as our ancestors did in this historic wine-producing town in La Rioja. The result is a red wine with the soul of a white, much fresher, lighter, and more complex.
Appearance: This is a very light-bodied red wine, hence its name. It displays great vivacity and retains its vibrant red hues, which denote energy and youth. It has a brilliant shine that, combined with the intense red tones, gives the glass a very special luminosity.
Nose: Aromatically intense, it retains its primary aromas, despite being an aged wine. The influence of Garnacha stands out with notes of red fruit, strawberry yogurt, and light hints of lollipop. Certain fresh tones are also perceived, with balsamic, floral, and citrus notes.
Palate: This is a wine that is easy to drink, with great fluidity throughout its passage across the palate. It abandons the structure of red wines to reveal itself with complete delicacy, with a smooth and pleasant texture, reminiscent of a white wine. Pure elegance within a balance of varieties.
Varietals: Garnacha Tinta and Viura, although the vineyard also includes scattered vines of Tempranillo, Malvasía, Graciano, and Mazuelo. The percentage of white and red grapes is very similar.
Aging: 10 months in 5,000-liter oak vats.
Vineyard: A small plot located in Cárdenas, in the heart of the Alto Najerilla region, at an altitude of 600 meters. Planted in 1957 on clay-ferrous soils with a high percentage of conglomerate rock at their base. Its most distinctive feature is the mixed planting, with similar percentages of white and red varieties.
Winemaking: Harvested on September 29th, the wine was made as a single-estate wine, blending the white and red varieties together. It macerated for four days in concrete tanks, then transferred to stainless steel tanks to complete fermentation.
Alcohol Content: 13% Vol.
