Ambrosii Calepini Dictionarium by Ambrosii Calepini is a Latin dictionary in parchment binding, first edition published in Venice by In Aedibus Manutianis, comprising 900 pages of original Latin text.
Description from the seller
The “Calepino”, the dictionary by Ambrogio Calepino, was the dictionary par excellence of the modern age, so much so that the author's name became a common noun to indicate any great dictionary or encyclopedia.
The Aldine contribution: The edition curated by Paolo Manuzio unites the authority of Calepino's text with the philological precision and the typographic quality of the famous printers’ dynasty founded by Aldus Manutius in Venice.
The text explains the revisions: the addition of new definitions, the correction of quotations by classical authors, and the improvement of Greek terms.
The work contains the important "additions" by Paolo Manuzio, conceived both for the comprehension and elegance of the Latin language, and for knowledge of Roman history and antiquities.
An emblematic coat of arms that includes a crowned eagle on an anchor with a twisted dolphin (the classic symbol of the Aldine workshop) supported by winged putti.
Ancient handwritten notes: There are ink annotations from the period both at the top (Michaelis...) and at the sides of the emblem, including the Latin phrase "Virtute duce, comite fortuna" (With virtue as guide and fortune as companion, Cicero’s famous motto).
FIRST PART no. pages 471
SECOND PART no. pages 470
THIRD PART no. pages 75
